Willard Torres cares about two things: keeping himself and his best friend Ace Wilson safe. In a world of toxic junkyards and tyrannical soldiers, a world abandoned by the gods, that's a tall order. 

A nation of cowards, their spirits trampled beneath the government's boots, is beginning to do the unthinkable: get angry. This scares Torres, because a revolution is a definite way to ensure that he and Ace will not be safe. But he does not know that something else is stirring, something great and slow and unseen, and that he should be a lot more scared than he is.
