To keep myself from losing track of: all the contests I've entered, all the contests I've volunteered myself as a judge (or let myself be voluntold into judging), all the books I've had to read as a contestant or as a judge, all the deadlines, and all the other important stuff, I've decided to create a book that registers all these things in a somewhat organized fashion. I can't remember who advised me to do that, but whoever you are, and there are probably several of you, thank you. I've been reading that it's extremely common for contests to be a bit sluggish with follow-up if a person wins a major prize and gets graphics and shout-outs, so I'll use this book to keep track of that, too. I had no idea so many people would be adding my personal convenience book to their own bookshelves, let alone voting for chapters - if my book of contests is useful to other people, that makes me happy. Very happy. However, I feel I must reiterate that although other people are welcome to browse my public contest logs and look for contests, look for information about details of contests (i.e. you want me to pour you some tea), etc, these contest logs are primarily for my own use. I enter so many contests that I can't keep track of them without a log. I forget important details, too, including things like "Note to self: You do not get along with this contest host, best not participate in their contests." This was never meant to be an "expose" book. I'm not exposing anybody. Contests are matters of public record, as are any comments made in the contest books. I'm just a ditz who needs a written log to keep track of everything. I would lose my head if it wasn't attached to my shoulders. Pushing off the sink in irritation, I turn to leave but he grabs my bare upper arm. My blood boils in annoyance while my skin tingles with excitement. He perks a brow, obviously sensing it. "Your aura is in disarray," he states bleakly. "Yeah, no shit Sherlock." My Earthly phrase earns me a tilt of his head and I scoff. "Where have you been, Beta?" "On a mission in the Xin Galaxy." "Okay? Would it not be wise to inform your OA of any missions that require your departure? Let go." I pull against his grip and he reluctantly lets go. "Yes, however, this mission did not require your presence nor your opinion," he replies candidly. My eye twitches and wordlessly, I turn away once more but his grip on my arm returns, this time more gentle, as if pleading rather than restraining. "I only meant that this mission did not require you to accompany me as my OA in pretence. It's safer to stay with your younglings out of sight anytime the role is not needed," his voice softer. "You disappeared after you..." I pause and shake my head. I feel embarrassed to say it out loud to him. I feel embarrassed at how much it affected me. |WATTYS 2022 WINNER - HORROR| Shawn, a convicted criminal, never thought she'd see the sun again, let alone call another star system her home. When she's offered an out from her prison sentence, she embarks on a dangerous interstellar expedition along with 18 of Earth's most intelligent criminals. Their task is to set up a base on a supposedly habitable planet and prepare it for colonization. Although the planet has liquid water and a breathable atmosphere, it is believed to host only microbial life. However, upon arriving, Shawn and the rest of the colonists learn that assumption was grossly incorrect. In a brutal attack from rampaging wildlife, everyone but Shawn and four other colonists are killed. The five survivors retreat to the cavernous network beneath the ground seeking safety, but they soon come to a terrible discovery. These caves aren't ordinary caves, and they are no safer down under than they were on the surface. [][][] This was originally my entry for the 2021 Open Novella Contest, and it received an honorable mention! It has now been expanded into a full length novel. I used prompt number 53: "When wildlife starts rampaging, all the humans are forced underground. However, they come to a terrible discovery that being underground is no safer than being on the surface."
