They can't save the world; that's impossible. But they may be able to save each other. Clementine 'Clem' Bailey has been Sam's crush since freshman year, though nothing has ever come if it. And now, Sam doubts anything ever could, not with some virus akin to rabies spreading quick as lightning through the population. Besides, she has survived long enough on her own. And love is weakness; best for the sake of all involved to never let it develop. Survival is Sam's main priority. She has to live. Has to get to the evacuation point her mother told her of, the one she'll be waiting at. But then Clem and her brother enter the picture, sending her plans (and that carefully maintained, need-no-one-else facade, into disarray.
