Vagary

In a spur of the moment decision, Esmerelda decides to leave all her problems behind. Her controlling parents, her abusive husband, and her old life are all left in the past as she drives away to meet her childhood best friend Penn, in the hopes that he can help her get back on her feet for a while.

All she needs to do to get there is take on one simple job. Babysitting the Kasai children, twins Erin and Angie and Darcie, their older brother. With seemingly no problems in her plan, for the first time in her life, things seem to shaping up for Esmerelda and she is finally in control.

Until she meets Dirk, Darcie's imaginary friend.

Everyone in the tiny town refers to Dirk as if he's a real person, saving him seats and tables, having conversations with him, and blaming problems or praises on him. Ezy seems to be the only person who isn't going along with the game. But as the day goes by and Dirk continues to make his presence known, Esmerelda begins to question everything she knows.

What will become of her now if Penn doesn't take her? Will she ever be truly alone again? What separates fantasy from reality? Is she making the right decisions?
