17 year old Payton Arlon has always been an introvert when it comes to the real world, but in the gaming world, she lets go of her cares and can really be herself. She finds herself extremely drawn to a virtual reality fantasy game, with a supposed cash prize of an unknown amount.
However, this is no ordinary game. This game requires strength of the mind, and dedication. The players are trapped in the game until they reach the end and defeat the final level, or until they die and are returned to their world. This game is built around teamwork and trust between six people randomly selected to be in a party.

She expresses what she can't convey through words in her mind by using analogies of TV characters or songs. Eliz ponders whether there's a place for her, viewing life through the lens of a mother who had to raise her alone and a sister who resembles a model from a magazine. A friend who is more of a friend when both are doing badly and a job she got because of dropping out of college. Add being monosyllabic, withdrawn, and a boss she doesn't know how to talk to because she "thinks" she's interested in him, but what does she do with that?
