The Vanishing happens once a year, every spring equinox. A single maiden disappears into the night, taken by what the people of Wetherfinn refer to only as "The Monster." None of the maidens are ever seen again and no one knows where they go or what happens to them. The only clue as to who will be taken next is that it will be a female between the ages of twelve and eighteen.

It's Jane's eighteenth year; time is almost up. Feeling as if she's been holding her breath for the past six years, she looks forward to the equinox and her birthday passing so she never has to worry about being taken in The Vanishing ever again. Her only worries can then be taking care of her aging mother and staying clear of The Hedge that hides in the forest that skirts the small town of Windsmir. Old legends and fairytales that surround The Hedge are much more welcomed than the reality of The Monster.

But then the night arrives and Jane realizes she hasn't escaped the threat, even in her last year. Instead, she is dragged from her bed in the middle of the night and discovers the truth of The Vanishing. When she narrowly escapes her fate as the chosen maiden, she has nowhere to run but the forest, toward the unstoppable and impenetrable hedge there. When Jane becomes unceremoniously stuck within the walls of The Hedge, she must race to find a way through the branches, back to Windsmir, where she can reveal the truth behind The Vanishing and save innocents all over the kingdom. Including the one The Hedge was meant to trap.
