Nothing goes in or out of the town of Welles, Nebraska, without the Plain Riders knowing about it. They are in charge of protection, watch and trade. Almost every family in town is indebted to them or has business with them, and nothing happens that doesn't reach the ears of Wyatt Himmel, the club's leader. There are even rumors that the small police station in town has a direct line to Himmel's house, but everyone insists on it all being hearsay. Bryce Himmel, Wyatt's seventeen-year-old son, is a young man who wishes to one day attend college and leave Welles behind, but dreams of following in his father's footsteps. One day, he tags along with some of his father's men to a casino in Omaha, hoping that a taste of the life might stop the dreams...
