Along the way, he uncovers fragments of memories and clues about his past, including his connection to a girl named Teresa, who arrives mysteriously in the Glade shortly after him. Conflict arises when the stability of the Glade is disrupted by attacks from Grievers and internal tensions among the boys, exacerbated by Thomas's emerging memories and his role in challenging the status quo. He remembers his involvement in the Maze's creation as part of a secretive organization, W.C.K.D., whose experiments on the Gladers were aimed at finding a cure for a deadly virus, the Flare.
