She met Lavender when she was 7 in the woods. They took care of each other, Lavender was also a witch whose parents were killed. They were found in the woods when they were 17 and 18. At the time witches were still being hung, so they went into hiding with Artemis, a woman in her late 20s.(27) she was the leader of a nearby Coven, she "adopted" the girls as her own.
