Matilynn DeHaven was a Marine Gunnery Sergeant in the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines. During a routine patrol, Matilynn was gunned down by a sniper. In the attempt to get Matilynn out of the crossfire a fellow marine, a Sergeant, was fatally wounded. Matilynn attempted to stop the bleeding pouring out of his chest cavity. She was hit again with two more bullets, one in the shoulder and the other in her lower abdomen. Matilynn lost consciousness hearing the Sergeant whisper his last words, 'please live Mattie.'
