"Go on the roadtrip they said.
It'll be fun they said." I mumbled.

I looked up at the sun. "Yeah no. Fuck you heat."

"AURORA!" Mom yelled.

Lydia however gave me the first proud grin in a whole year.





The Hardey family always goes on a roadtrip every summer.

Does Aurora want to go?

Nah. 

But she does. It's better than being stuck in an old house all summer. All summer with a broken AC.

So she'll put up with her brat of a brother, and recently turned enemy of a sister.

And her sunshine incarnate dad, strict mom, as well as her other relatives.

Make it to Colorado for the barbecue, because the ribs are worth it.

And who knows? 

She might even meet some cute girls on the way.

And even if she doesn't?

It's gonna be one hell of a road trip.

Aurora sat in the passenger seat, her hands folded tightly in her lap. Her long, black dreadlocks cascaded down her back, swaying slightly with each bump in the road. Her chocolate skin glistened faintly under the dim light of the car, but she didn't notice. The world outside the window passed by in muted shades of gray and green, the trees thick with mist, the road winding up a steep hill that seemed to stretch on forever. Her mom was talking again, her voice upbeat and false. "This is for the best, baby. I know you don't think so now, but this place will help you heal. You're going to meet people who can understand what you've been through. You just need to open up. To let go of the past." Aurora clenched her jaw, feeling the heat rise in her chest. Her ex's house had been reduced to ash and rubble, the flames of her anger licking the air like something she couldn't control. But this-this place? It felt wrong from the start. The truth was, she didn't belong here. Not in the sterile hallways of Whispering Pines, not in the cold, uncaring arms of a psych ward, and certainly not under the watchful eyes of the people who had decided to send her away. "You'll see, honey," her mom continued, her voice syrupy sweet. "You'll get better. You'll be happy again." Aurora looked out the window, not trusting herself to speak. If only her mom knew the truth. The truth about how the fire had felt-how, for the first time in forever, she'd felt alive. She wasn't sorry. Not really. Aurora didn't know it yet, but this place would change her. Change all of them. And soon, the obsession would turn into something darker-something dangerous. They would kill for each other, lie for each other, and cross lines they never imagined. And in the end, none of them would be able to escape the pull.
