Every human in this world has an innate power. However, using this power leads to sickness and death. Instead, humans use robotic companions--called automatons--to channel magical power through imbedded crystals. Dia Krystallo dreams of owning her own mechanic shop, and following in the footsteps of her idol, Giovanni; the person credited with giving automatons sentience. In order to do this, she attends the prestigious Automaton Academy. Zeno wakes up to an influx of magic from a human. He remembers little, and is considerably damaged. Faced with a choice between life of servitude or death, he choses the former. However, his new master, Dia, is different from other owners he's had before.
