The young patriot, Harry Drake, meets Meredith Carter and the two have an instant connection. But Meredith's grandmother has other plans for her. As the fighting comes closer to home, dark secrets are revealed. Fate seems to have other plans for Harry and Meredith's as their worlds turn upside down. - Title inspired by the 18th-century song that was played at the Surrender of Yorktown (1781). -

Merciful, indeed. Merciful, for now she knew how cruel that promise had been. How had she managed to hold onto those words, as the world around her fell to ash? He hadn't remembered her at all, and she doubted he dwelled on the indefinite promise he'd made her. He hadn't remained the same, that she knew. He had risen to the top, left her to watch from far below as he became the star he had always dreamed of being. To believe he would return for her just because he had said so was ludicrous. Yet, if by some twist of fate, he did come back? "I'll come back for you," he'd said. Those vague words would be her undoing. **Inspired by Max Schneider's song "I'll Come Back for You" **Please do not steal my writing. This story took years to get down on paper and so much hard work!
