Charles is on his way from a small farm in North Carolina to his own home near Asheville, With him is a small girl that he believes to be suffering from tuberculosis. The young doctor had promised the child's parents he would personally take care of her since they themselves were unable to come with and felt wary of leaving their daughter in the care of someone they had never met. The trip was going well until they're interrupted by a group of armed men looking to rob and murder the both of them. Charles fails to keep the child safe, but is given a second chance by a new stranger to try again.
