At the estimated age of fourteen, Leo had been the first person to ever come out of the box and enter the desolate, uninhabited grassland surrounded by large walls of stone that opened and closed every dawn and dusk. Alone and afraid, Leo begins to build a society around him to help him survive - having the exact amount of materials to do so.

When other boys are sent up the exact same way he was every month in sequence, stripped of memories, alone and afraid, Leo makes it his mission to expand his society and make a new civilization with those around him - in the end being democratically voted one of their leaders despite being far younger than most would expect a leader to be. Leo's ultimate goal is simple: to keep peace until they can escape the Maze that trapped them within the walls.

However when the sequence is broken three years later when the first ever girl is sent up only a day after a boy called Thomas, Leo and the Gladers find their civilization being challenged when the doors fail to close and supplies stop coming up from the box. What peace that had been built over the last three years was destroyed and there was only one question that remained in Leo's mind.
