Since the end of the Wars of Shadow over five hundred years ago, the Northern Realms have been in relative peace. Kyran, a young man and watchmen in the Eye of Galdrin, lives alone in an isolated tower in the Fangral Mountains, keeping watch over a merchant road. Deep in the winter months, when the road sees little use, Kyran receives a letter of warning about an approaching darkness. Through either unfortunate circumstance or god-ordained destiny, Kyran is swept into the growing storm, and he must fight alongside his new companions to survive.
