A 21-year-old seems to slip through time on an exchange trip to China and ends up in a time period and land not known to any of our history books. Aside from the fact that there is a language barrier and open hostility due to her foreignness and dark skin, she also has to contend with the fact that she is all alone in a strange, magical, ancient empire with no way home in sight.
One moment away from being executed, she catches the eye of the 17-year-old Crown Prince and is forcefully given to him as a concubine. Despite her reservations and modern ideals, she has to go along with it to keep her life... despite the fact that he is already married to the Empress' niece and has a sickly son she is forced to act as nanny to.
As she desperately tries to figure out how to get back home, she slowly falls in love with the Prince, his son, and his people. But politics is a dangerous game; all eyes are on the throne. A target is on her husband's back, threatening to catch anyone he holds dear in the cross hairs.
