In 1745, Miss Mercy Savage is left an orphan after her notorious, money lender father is killed in a mysterious fire. His infamous riches, and extensive library, are all left to her under a single condition. She  must leave Boston for the town of her parents' origin, a small New England hamlet snug in midst of marshland and swamps. There she becomes the ward to her father's only childhood friend, Cyril Bawden, at his sprawling brick home filled with books and shadows. But there is a dark figure haunting her steps, one that is seeking what is due to him, something her father promised years earlier.
