When Rosaline Hume receives a particularly concerning letter before her great aunt Liza's death, she is left not only in mourning at the loss of her beloved guardian, but also marvelling at how little she really knew about her.

One letter leads to another as Rosaline navigates her way through her great aunt's life, and before long, Rosaline has an understanding of her guardians life that she never could have imagined - as well a will bequeathing to her all of her great aunt's posessions.

Coming to terms with the fact that her great aunt was not who she imagined her to be, Rosaline is left to unravel the murky history of her estranged family. As she realizes the dangers that possessed her great aunt and perhaps her family as a whole, Rosaline is left to wonder if she has ever truly been safe, and in the newfound possession of her great aunts assets - if she is being led in an eerily similar direction as her great aunt.
