I whip around to face her, anticipating anguish, tears streaming from her eyes. I'm met with a stone face. Her eyes are cold and emotionless, her lips drawn into a thin line. She stares back at the now-forming crowd as if nothing has happened.
"Ok."
It's quiet and quick, snipped as if she doesn't trust herself to speak. She opens her mouth as if to say something else, but closes it just as quickly. She turns and walks away from the curious faces, heading towards the back of the school as the little audience dissapates. I stand there in shock.
Did she not understand what had happened? Did she not understand what this meant? Gone was the laughter in her eyes, gone was the smile that could brighten an old cripple's day. All the emotion, everything I had come to know and love was hidden back inside the stone walls that surrounded her heart, and I missed it. I made a vow deep inside my soul that day, standing alone in a deserted hallway. I would take that wall down brick by brick until she could never hide again. I would break her heart.
