The compound they live in is a living hell and after getting fed up with it, they take off in the middle of the night. Trying to make it without the chained linked fences protecting you is harder than it sounds, and proves to be problematic. Sometimes it takes great sacrifice to make it in the middle of a zombie apocalypse.
