It's the night of Zora's life-partner ceremony. She's about to be bound to a man she's unfortunately known her whole life, a man she was given to in exchange for a forgiven debt by her father, a man who's widely regarded as the temperamental alpha heir of her clan. She's prepared to do anything to avoid a forced bond with him. Except maybe she doesn't have to.

Artax is the proud leader of his newly-formed tribe of dragon-rider outcasts, a scarred shapeshifter himself and cynical of all others to boot. His tribe may have a fearful reputation, admittedly well-deserved, but they are happy, healthy, and growing. That was his plan that night: to take over yet another smaller clan underneath his own by removing their heir.

It was supposed to be simple. Something he had done countless times before.
