On the first day of every new year, women who are 18 have to report to Observance Day. On this day, their measurements, strengths, weaknesses, health, compliance, athletic ability and other qualities are uploaded into the Directory. The women then return to Echelon, the lowest rung of society, where they continue their lives. However, at any point, a man from the Nobles, the elite group of society, can select them from the Directory and have them served Desirence Papers. If served, they must immediately oblige, leave their home, and assume the new role that they were selected for.
Ellis, a newly turned 18-year-old, was hoping to never be served papers from a Noble. Unlike most girls, she found peace and contentment in the simplicity of Echelon society and feared leaving her family even if it meant a more luxurious lifestyle. However, the one thing she was never prepared for was to be selected before she even entered the Directory. Behind the one-way glass of the measurement room were the Unobtainables, the highest-ranking members of society. With no communication beyond your immediate community, stories of the Unobtainables were told only as fairytales and imagined to be a life of great wealth and royalty. After being thrust into a group of people that were only rumored to be true, Ellis is shocked at just how very wrong these fairytales were. A life of deceit, injustice and murder is paved before her with no way out.
