A kingdom in the brink of war.

A heart so fierce and a will unbroken.

And a darkness, rising.

In the kingdom of Martel, every generation a competition is held. The Parade of Bones, where the first born child of the most prominent and powerful witch clans are summoned to the palace to best each other in a series of trials of magic and wit.

Ariadne, the bastard daughter of Lord Miller Wentworth, had always longed and dreamt of joining the competition. Not only does she have the will, she too has a burning power within her. The only problem is that she is not fit to be a novice. But destiny favors only the bold. And Ariadne is beyond bold. Price has a power, and Ariadne is willing to go at lengths to claim what she thinks is rightfully hers. But as Ariadne climbs the ladder, dark forces are at work. And as Ariadne fights for her place in the court, she soon realizes that there is more to what she bargained for.

There are many millions of parallels. Worlds living and breathing at the same time - time doesn't even exist, 18th century England is living and breathing alongside the present day. While London is living in the past, Afalon is pushing toward it's future. 7 sons, a rare and lucky amount, are Princes in line to the throne. Melanie is in the 18th century, conning each village out of their wares in exchange to see but an inch into their future. Then, after an unlucky exchange, she's dragged into the floating court-city of Afalon in the Æther - another world entirely - to stand trial for someone else crimes. Trial by fire. Trial without end. Ameline has been busy pillaging and murdering her way through Afalon for months, making the ælfin pay for what they did to her family. Then, on a whim, she decides to go big or go home. She kills one of the Seven Princes. Those same princes who embody the attributes of each deadly sin... Now, another girl is brought from her homeworld, Earth, to stand trial for Ameline's own crimes. Worse still... she recognizes her face so, so much. It's her own. A doppelgänger. A modern twist on terrible childhoods and anti-heros. Melanie and Ameline's story is a page-turner you certainly need to start, but with such tragedy and twisting themes of joy and horror you'll want to finish. Witchspawn. Rotbringer. Child of Darkness. There are many names for someone born under a Warmoon, and Rhoa Strongcastle has heard them all. It doesn't help that on the night she was born, the Rot arrived, bringing sickness in its wake. In spite of the suspicion surrounding her, Rhoa works hard, training to become a Keeper like her father and brothers, guarding the ancient monster locked in the tower above Ardusk. But every twenty-one years the Warmoon rises again, and under its pull the monster grows stronger. With her twenty-first birthday less than a fortnight away, Rhoa's family is preparing for a new battle to keep the monster from breaking free and unleashing fiery havoc on everyone in its path. Things are not going according to plan. Tragedy leaves Rhoa to defend the Strongcastle fortress alone, and she makes the terrifying discovery that the Rot is more dangerous than she ever imagined - and it is coming for the tower. As threats to the fortress mount from multiple directions, Rhoa faces an impossible dilemma: trust what she knows or throw all of her hope on the very thing she fears. Open Novella Contest 2020
