Unfortunately for the world, Imani was not known to have any patience. 100 years has passed, and so far the Fire Nation still has the upper hand, Airbenders are gone, Ba Sing Se is rumored to be falling on it's last legs and Avatar has not yet returned. The spirits can't interfere with the physical world...but they kinda did when Imani was born. Now, Ba Sing Se may fall to the Fire nation and it's very true that the Avatar may never come, but the Airbenders were not yet finished. Imani had been born and she was going to make it everyone's problem.
