woman are lured into their deaths in a city that sits at the very door doorstep of devilish entities, entities that make the stars themselves do their bidding, entities that bend the oceans to their will and human minds to their own satisfactions.

In the city of Brookenburg, death comes as frequent as the sun does rise, everyone knows of the strange women who own antique shops and sell voodoo dolls and in some twisted way, ignore their antiques.

When the deaths become harder to ignore and far too frequent, not only the deaths of humans but the deaths of the voodoo queens, the gypsies, the psychics and so forth raises panic and the city of Brookenburg becomes aware of new evil - evil that is delivering a message of its own.

Who takes care of the cases that the oh-so-powerful mistress of the arts cannot be bothered with? That job falls to the lowest in the crafts, the shape shifters, women with the power to break and reform their bones to the shapes of others - the familiars.

Zama Ndlovu obeys her mistress and sets out to find out who the culprit is, only to find something she never thought possible - a male witch.
