Happily Laughing

The sounds of tarring flesh and snapping bone riddled through her ears as she sat inside an old closet. Instead of fear, the child donned a mask of complete stillness, as if lost in her own world. Ignoring the sounds of what remained of her parents entered her ears, along with the faint huffing that was riddled with giggles and mutters.

Glancing into the beady eyes of the small kitten toy that had been stuffed into her lap, she pats idly at the soft and mangled body. Her only friend had long been falling apart.

She focused on the toy, and not the waking silence outside the closet, not the sudden harsh breathing outside its doors, and didn't flinch when those doors were wrenched open, only glancing at a shadowed figure before...
