My grandmother used to tell me stories about the old days, a time of peace, when the Avatar kept balance between the Water Tribes, Earth Kingdom, Fire Nation, and Air Nomads. But all that changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop the Fire Nation. But when the world needed him most, he vanished.
Over a hundred years have passed, and the Fire Nation is nearing victory in the war. Four years ago, my father and the men of my tribe went to help in the fight against the Fire Nation, leaving my brother to take care of the tribe. As for me, the Fire Nation caught wind of the fact that I showed signs of being a waterbender when I was five. They raided my village, desperate to control as many waterbenders as possible just in case the Avatar cycle had continued. That was thirteen years ago. I've been living in the royal palace in the Fire Nation capital, Sozin, and traveling with the prince ever since.
Some people believe that the Avatar was never born into the Air Nomads, and that the cycle was broken. That's what the Fire Nation tells people, anyway. But I haven't lost hope. I know he's out there. And finding him will change the world.

An alternate universe in which Katara was captured by the Fire Nation and was raised alongside Zuko and Azula.
I began writing this when I was 13, it was originally posted on the account The_Tenth_Doctor8, which is my account that I no longer use.
I do not own these characters or the show this is based on. All characters have been aged up appropriately due to the mature nature and context of this piece of writing. Artistic license has been taken for some areas of the story, but I do my best to make sure everything at least makes logical sense within the context of the ATLA universe.

Avatar: the Last Airbender Fanfiction Zuko x OC Makki is the twin sister of Sokka and the older sister of Katara. She is one of the last Southern water benders, along with her sister. At the age of ten, she lost her mother in a Fire Nation raid, right at the South Pole; all she has left is her mother's necklace, which Katara wears around her neck. After that, her father left to fight in the Hundred Year War, along with all the other grown warriors, and Makki and her siblings were put under the care of their Gran Gran. She grew up practicing her bending and helping Katara with all the chores, while their brother practiced his fighting skills and tried teaching the younger boys of their village. Makki's siblings followed their destiny of helping Aang master all four elements while Makki was stuck on a path with the Fire Nation Prince Zuko and his uncle Iroh. The three of them would cross paths with Aang, Katara, and Sokka, but Makki would always have trouble reuniting with her siblings, so she would try her best to show Zuko the right path. Heimat: a place that you can call home; a sense of belongingness, acceptance, safety and connection to homeland A decade has passed after the final battle between the Avatar and the Fire Nation, a decade after the defeat of their Fire Lord. It is a time of prosperity for most, but the crimes commited during the war couldn't be reversed. Benders were taken away from their families, people were slaughtered, their belongings, homes and land taken away. This, had been the instance when it came to the northwest part of the Earth Kingdom, that had went on to become the Fire Nation colonies. The people of the Fire Nation and the Earth Kingdom lived on in the land that was given to them and gradually, they became one. They collaborated and cooperated in order to live and so they got richer, learnt to depend on each other for their survival. By the end of the war, the people, even though they came from different backgrounds, were one. A decade after the end of the war, the Avatar is commanded to solve the matter of whether the former Fire Nation citizens need to move or not. Aang believes the nations need to be separated. The people in the colonies do not, hatred starts to grow in their hearts. The Avarar will need the help of a companion more than any other time, and there is no better person to aid him than the secret waterbender that's part of the Fire Nation fleet, the woman who risked her own life to get him to safety, even though this had been the first time they had met in their lives.
