Mira Khatib is only a child when her family decides to move to Italy and leave everything behind: their hometown, Amman, and especially Baba Sami, Mira's beloved grandfather living in the middle of Jordan's mainland hills. After the expatriation, Mira must overcome the challenges of loneliness and ostracism that come with being an unwelcome immigrant in a foreign country. She will be helped by an unusual friend who will guide her with his fierce courage until she will finally find her own.

The two characters form a strained relationship, full of tension and emotional turmoil. The story is ultimately about the complexities of marriages and the expectations and pressures placed on women and men in such situations.
