With only knowing two bits of information about her parents which set her on the wrong path to figuring out who she is, things get righted when she meets an earthbending boy, a family of airbenders, lifelong friends, and the Avatar. 

But don't think this came easy. If it was, there wouldn't be a book about her life, now would there?
