What would it mean to discover that your entire life had been a waiting room?
Aeriah spent years in an orphanage, in the particular quiet of a life that seemed to have no special destination. Then she opened a book she had found tucked in the attic, and something came out of it. Something that called itself a Guardian: ancient, impossible, and entirely certain that it had found exactly who it was looking for. Aeriah had never believed in guardians. She was beginning to revise that.
The Riesseville family came for her next... nobility, magic, a kindness she couldn't see all the way to the bottom of. They had been sent from another world to retrieve her. They had not told her that. There were, she would discover, many things she had not been told.
Her forgotten past turned out to be less forgotten than sealed, and the sealing had been done for reasons that were beginning to seem, the more she uncovered them, both necessary and unforgivable. Somewhere between two worlds, between the girl she remembered and the person the universe apparently had in mind, Aeriah is looking for the truth of her own name.
The answer is going to cost her something.
