"It's warm." She says. Even before I feel the cool water lap at my feet, I know that's not what she's talking about.

"What is?" I ask. The sounds of the ocean and the birds finding their spots on the beach was echoing earlier, but now everything almost seems like it's happening way off in the distance. She takes a breath, moving forward and staring at my chest. My fingers flex at my sides and I don't know why at first, not until she wraps her arms around herself.

"Today is." To someone else, that might make no sense at all, but I understand what she's saying immediately. I don't know what it is...maybe it's the view, maybe it's the fact that it's just the two of us right now and it's an intimate moment, but I feel that warmth she's talking about, and it spreads through me.

Her eyes go to my hand as I reach towards her. She stretches her own out and I tug her closer gently by her hand and just hold her.

"Yeah...it's pretty warm today." I say, agreeing. "It's a beautiful day." She nods, moving closer and only hesitating for a moment before leaning her head against my chest and I just know: I'm going to protect Ayana for however long it takes. I don't want to see her hurt again.

~~~
Ayana and Dave first met in sixth grade and were opposites. Dave was cautious while Ayana was bubbly and out there, bright and friendly. She was the new kid and he was intrigued by the girl who smiled so bright.
It's senior year in high school now and after being gone at a military academy for three years, Dave is back home. Ayana has changed completely and she's lost that bright smile. With a new year comes new developments; growth, a rekindled friendship and love are a few of them.
Life isn't always a smooth ride, but just as there are downs, there are bound to be ups as well.
This story is an interracial romance that discusses topics of growth, bullying, and friendship. It is also a bit of a slowburn.
It's her first day at a new school, a random person Airdropped her something and they begin to chat. This mystery guy is 17 and also his Junior year and is a football player. She knows nothing about him so she's determined to learn more. What she finds out shocks her completely. Preview: "Y/n! Come on let's go!" "Yeah! You are going to make us late!" "God! I'm coming I'm coming! I just needed to grab something." I said walking out to them. "Is that a book?" "Yeah- I really need to know what happens! I'm almost done with it, once I finish I'll watch the game don't worry." I assured the two of them. "Okay want ever you say." We left to go to the game finding a close-to-the-front seat. The three of us sat, we already bought some drinks and snacks. The game soon started and I began to read. "Player down!" Someone yelled as they ran a crossed the field. My head snapped up to get a look and I saw number 22 sitting up with one leg bent and the other laying on the ground. He seamed calm. "Alright, let's get you up," some one said kneeing next to number 22. "No no, I'm fine. Help them, they may be out, he is not responding to me." 22 insisted. Once the others heard this they ran to the other person, 85 from the other team. 22 glanced at the bleachers, briefly making eye contact with me, he then quickly looked back, almost as if doing a double take. He held the eye contact this time, I gave him a small smile and he gave me a sweet smile. "He smiled at you!" "It was just a smile," I said going back to my book. "You have a crush." "You definitely do, but we won't say anything, yet." I rolled my eyes at both of them. They were right, no, maybe. He was cute, the way his hair fell, and how he put the other player before himself. I thought it was cute.
"I can't promise you that shit will get better," Booker said. "But I can promise you that I'll be here with you while you go through it." That didn't stop just 'cause we changed." She swallowed. "I know you want to be here. I'm just scared one day you won't." Booker tilted his head, brows pulling together. "Why you say that?" "'Cause people don't always stay when it stops being easy. And I know I haven't been... easy to be around." He shook his head, lips tugging into a tiny, crooked smile. "Mani. He smells like honey. He leans in my ear THUMP THUMP THUMP THUMP and whispers, "Don't you even think about rejecting me". I look at him in shock, how is this being of goodness, of grace, looking at me with an emotion so rare for his kind to look at my kind with.... LOVE. He smirks and blushes at my reaction to him and his eyes brighten in delight, his eyes then trail to my lips, and his thumb brushes across them, I let out a shudder. And so a journey of confusion and heartbreak begins... *WARNING* There is some mature language in some parts of the story This isn't a full on happy romance story The storyline may be a little confusing/complicated, but was made like that on purpose Characters and events = a mix of fiction and non-fiction Here are a few snippets... *** I looked at him sideways. "So, um, what are we?" I had to ask. Josh seemed taken aback but still answered casually. "What do you mean? Friends. Like always." I nodded again. Mm-hm. So friends who kissed. Yup, got it. Pretty clearly. "Alright." We headed upstairs to our second floor math class. *** "Yeah, but..." Joshua's voice was suddenly very quiet. It made me feel bad. "Realistically Carmen, we haven't been acting as 'just friends.'" He got louder. "In fact, for the past week or so, I've been considering you to be my girlfriend." He paused. "Is that wrong of me?" I sighed inwardly. "No. It's just, I think-" I searched for my words. "I think we're better off where we started. As two people who like each other and vibe well, but without a title to complicate things." I couldn't figure out whether I was just saying this as an excuse not to be with him. My mind was jumbled. "No title makes things more complicated." *** Enjoy!
"Do you trust me?" I asked, staring down at her. My voice suddenly dropped to a lower register, almost grumbling. She looked at the waves inviting her and then back at me again. I knew she carried a lot of emotional baggage for a 21-year-old, and I wanted to take some of it off, even if just a little. "It's yes or no, Sia?" I pressed further, standing in front of her and asking again. "Do you trust me?" She nodded a slow yes, and I grabbed her hand again. Her grip tightened on mine as if she were scared, and I walked us further into the waves. The cold water finally hit our feet, and she shivered at the sensation as she looked up at me. "You... you just won't disappear, right?" she asked, her eyes filled with uncertainty. It was heart-wrenching. I pulled her closer by her hand, making her stand right in front of me as I gently fixed a strand of her hair with my other hand. "I have nowhere else to go..." I whispered back. It was true. She had become my entire life without even knowing it. ...
