3rd century Rome; The empire is in tatters, the social structure is deteriorating, and the economy is falling apart. Amid a seemingly downhill process, a fourteen-year-old boy named Varius Avitus Bassianus ascends on the throne. History knows him better as Emperor Elagabalus, the young emperor that reigned for only four years.

After having no real claim to the throne and a military coup devised by his grandmother, Julia Maesa, Varius has an unsuccessful reign littered with scandal. From his religious background to his sexual preferences, with each day he is on the throne he becomes loathed more and more by the Roman senate and the empire.

In this alternate historical drama, the story depicts the first four years of Varius' reign with a different outcome. The teenage emperor's life finds a struggle with his power-hungry grandmother in a fight for governmental influence while also dealing with the dirty secrets of his personal life.
