Decades after The Great War, the proud clans of wolf-men remain exiled to the frozen North, struggling to survive. Trace, a sixteen-year-old wolf destined to someday lead his people, lives alongside eighty others in a collection of run-down shelters known only as "The Village". When the herds of wild animals begin to disappear from the tundra, an alarming situation develops. The Village's food reserves begin to drop rapidly. In a desperate attempt to stabilize the situation, Trace's father, the Alpha, begins leading hunting expeditions farther away from the Village. His efforts meet with little success. After Trace's father fails to return from a dangerous journey, the problems of the Village are suddenly thrust upon the boy's shoulders. Saddened by his father's disappearance and overwhelmed by the prospect of commanding his pack at such a young age, Trace decides to lead one final expedition whose outcome will determine the fate of the entire wolf civilization.
