In the 5th grade, papers were handed out for the cheesy, typical pen pal assignment. Once the year was over, the pen pals were long forgotten- for everyone except Fletcher. Going into the 10th grade, the soon to be 16 year old boy continues to write to the girl living in Mississippi. But when April shows up at Fletcher's school saying that her family is temporarily going to be living in the area, Fletcher begins to suspect something's going on. With April beginning to act strange and taking too many "sick days" off to be considered normal, Fletcher is not sure that he really knows everything about his pen pal.
