Gadolfi Dossler, a wood elf, is the only survivor when his ship goes down in a storm off the coast of Northwind. He washes ashore near the village of Horgardalr. Despite the wars and famine the villagers are facing, they take him, an outsider, in and nurse him back to health. When Gadolfi comes to, he can remember very little prior to the morning of the storm, except his own name and some basic information and fractured memories from his past. He chooses to stay with the villagers, who accept him as one of their own and train him to fight.
Almost a year later, they learn of an incoming invasion from an empire far to the south. When an island village off the coast is utterly destroyed by the invaders, they realise that they are doomed as long as they are warring with the neighbouring villages and kingdoms, and Gadolfi sets out to unite them all under a single banner and drive out the foreign invaders.
