This is the usual story of the jock and the geek with a twist or two here and there.
Mark Chase is in a dire situation, one he can't hope to conquer. His only choices are to either fail or work with the one girl he would rather avoid; Geek Queen and School Snob, Eliza Shannon.
Eliza has been roped into something she doesn't want to do; Tutoring Mark chase, her not-exactly-a-rival Rival. The consequence of not doing so is failure, something Eliza can not accept
Mark's friend Scott jokes that it was Fate that brought them together, but if that's the case then Fate has a twisted sense of humor
