Just before September 1943, Giulio Carme, a lieutenant in the Italian army meets Gilda Marnoni, the love of his life. He is immediately shipped to a senseless tour of duty on the island of Corsica, where the Germans attack the Italians after their armistice with the Allies. He manages to flee to Sardinia, now under American control, where he is assigned to Nebas. He becomes enveloped in a spider-web of amorous adventures where he is never sure whether he is the predator or the prey. On the mainland, Gilda becomes fully involved in the guerrilla war fought by the Italian partisans against Germans and Fascists. In the maelstrom of a fratricidal war, she actively participates in firefights and plays a central role in the survival of the partisan bands hiding in the local mountains. She is saved from capture by Carlo Copani, a stalwart Fascist who joins the rebels for her love. After the war, life slowly returns to normality. But it is never that easy...
