Axel Matthews is more alive in his head than he is in real life. He is dyslexic, sickle-cell anemic, and can't help thinking the worst about himself. Simona Russell's body is way too eager in forming white blood cells, but she tries-barely, actually-to look past her disease and live for the future, hoping her talent in music will aid her escape from Ottawa to promising New York City. When Axel's father who lives in Ottawa makes him pay a visit for Christmas to "bond" (how everyone except him sees it), Axel meets Simona and the pair form an incomprehensible connection. Simona becomes Axel's reason to live, unleashing the funny expressive guy that makes her laugh out loud, and it is only with Axel that Simona forgets she's leukemic, but as Simona's future brightens, Axel's continues to dim. This story contains themes of hope, grief, suicidal thoughts and the search for meaning. 𝐀𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫'𝐬 𝐭𝐢𝐩: Best read under your covers at three am.
