Based in future America, society has gone back to a time like the apartheid in South Africa. Not only are blacks and whites physically separate though but drastically unequal as well. Anyone who crosses the bounds set by society must go into hiding. For not even the consequences of being found can compare to their possible deaths in hiding.
The main character in the story is 13-year-old Charlotte "Lottie" McKinley. She lives with her three older brothers and their mentally ill mother. They want to seek help for their mother, but they can't. The one thing standing in their way is their skin. For they are as some would call "mulatto". The only person they can go to for help is their white father who stopped coming around. He isn't just their father though. He is also a government worker. He is their best helper but also their worst enemy.

𝐕𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐚𝐧 𝐑𝐚𝐣𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢 𝐗 𝐉𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐯𝐢 𝐌𝐚𝐝𝐚𝐧. In a world that screams, I stand in despair, My voice drowned out, lost in the air. Chains of tradition tighten each day, I long to escape, but I'm forced to stay. Each breath I take feels heavy and torn, Every mistake a scar I've worn. I crave a sky where I can be free, Away from the walls that imprison me. For now, I sit with my heart in pain, Silent, yet screaming, again and again. Though shattered, a spark in me still survives, Dreaming of freedom where my soul can rise.
