ONC Shortlister 2023! There are few rules in the Kingdom of Kadotaru, and punishment is not kind, even for the young prince who wishes he was anybody else. Tied to the crown, to his family, to his kingdom, there isn't much he can do. He isn't born to bear the crown, to rule over all the creatures of Kadotaru, but it still haunts him. He never thought to break a rule, there was too much fear deep in his heart. He never thought to break any rules, until she was able to see him. Humans. Humans don't have true sight. They aren't seers, or creatures of Kadotaru. So why can she see him? Why does she reach out to help him? When Souls Awaken
In a world that has never known mages, the phoenix god decides to shake things up, changing the soul of a human to grant him the powers of a phoenix. The god's twin sister soon follows, sending her loyal pet, hell's guardian, to find a new master to grant his powers too. All the while a girl and her best friend, a sloth, are doing their best to survive. Her fate is intertwined with these new mages as unrest rises throughout the lands with more gods interfering with human souls. This story will be updated every Friday! My entire body felt on fire under his intense gaze. I tried my best to avoid eye contact as he towered over me, but once my eyes met his, the usual amber color of his orbs went darker and darker until they were now of a fervent brown shade and his pupils dilated drastically. The sight shocked me, causing goosebumps to rise all across my arms as electricity shot up my spine and my stomach erupted not in butterflies, but rather, I'd say in pterodactyls. How bad could it be to enlist your female best friend into helping you lie to your Christian family about your new relationship with your male best friend and about your newfound sexuality? Not that bad, right? Right??? --------- Nova Queen and Arizona "Ari" Matthews weren't always close in high school, but after an intense and serious conversation in the library one day, the two become the best of friends until they go their separate ways their freshman year of college. Now in their mid 20s and freshly out of grad school, they are reunited in the park of their hometown where Ari asks a huge favor of Nova that she later wishes she had refused. But in the end, will she really wish she had refused? *FA spans a timeline from 2010-2020 to help the reader see how the relationships were built between characters in a partial series of flashbacks. It also helps the reader to really see into the minds of Arizona and Nova as they age, and the effect different life events have on them.
