"Fetch the mattress from my quarters and bring it up here," Arthur commanded.
Merlin doubted that that was even possible. "How am I supposed to carry a mattress on my own?"
"I don't know, strap it to your back." But what was he supposed to do when Arthur gave the order?

This is a fic about how Merlin actually did manage to carry the mattress all the way from Arthur's chambers to Gwen's house on his own, although at a great cost. (He was exhausted afterwards.) Although, maybe when he's so tired, Arthur will allow him to stay at Gwen's and share the mattress? (It was rather enormous for just one person, wasn't it?)

Set in the episode 2x02 The Once and Future Queen.

After escaping Morgana's never ending torture, a series of killings breaks out in Camelot. After the death of Uther and his son, Emrys and Morgana will be able to claim the throne for themselves and welcome in a new era. One where magic is welcomed. After discovering he has a dark half, Merlin sets out to find a way to stop the upcoming war and free himself from his inner monster, but the way doesn't seem easy. With the help of a letter from his father, he must learn to overcome Emrys before Emrys takes full control. I got the inspiration for this story from a similar oneshot on Fanfiction.net by Aeon The Dimensional Girl if the user wishes for me to take this one down I will, however I will point out that I expanded on the concept and definitely made it my own. Originally gonna be a one shot, but ended up being too long for a one shot. Merlin returns to Camelot after Arthur dies and gets banished by Gwen. He goes to sit by the lake of Avalon to wait for Arthur. Eventually Arthur returns. Merlin is not immortal in this version, however he is still extremely powerful. This is about their life together.
