A dad that has had a tough but privileged life falls into depression after losing his job and divorcing his wife, because of their different opinions on how to raise their kids. Their three kids slowly reach maturity as both parents have health issues, and both settle into an indirect way of getting money to support the family. The father, named Edward earns Social Security, and gets more and more bored with his life, and stressed by his two children's arguments, and general lack of compatibility. The middle sibling is an activist with very strong beliefs that can easily be misinterpreted or seen as extreme, the youngest is autistic and is quite infuriating (they see things differently and it can cause many a stress causing explanation from the others which usually either doesn't get through his thick skull or he disagrees with it, is oblivious, tries to be annoying for fun, and is kind of an asshole only sometimes doing it on purpose), there is also an oldest sibling who somewhat recently moved away, all of them are hard-headed and quite sarcastic. One day, Edward's autistic son, who is obsessed with video games, finds a sort-of basic VRMMORPG, that he finally convinces his dad to play it with him.
Edward is a pacifist in many ways, and is in that way is sort of a kindly old man.
