Life was hard. John knew that, especially in the wasteland of Post-Apocalyptic America. If the act of being born didn't kill you Raiders, The Institute, lack of food or clean water probably would. In fact, most things could easily lay claim to your life; an angry father, an aggressive older brother, a jaded ex-girl. It was decidedly no place for an empathetic human. It is the year 2077, despite the efforts of the Boston Police Department, organised crime in Boston is at it's highest. Divided in families and gangs these maffiosi have been the scourge of the Boston populaton for longer than any can imagine. However the board is soon going to change, big players will be wiped off allowing for the small ones to thrive or for the surviving to crush everyone under their heel.. Hoping to avoid the oncoming disaster the largest fish desperately look for a solution. After all, once the world has been set on fire, someone has got to rebuild it, right? Two hundred years later the world has changed, and certainly not for the best. Between the Raiders, mercs and horribly irradiated monsters that roam the late city of Boston, misery, famine, violence and fear haunt the commonwealth. And to make matters worse, the last barrier between the people and those that would hurt them; the Minutemen, recently crumbled under their own corruption. It is in this period that new players rise for the good of the people, whereas old players emerge from their slumber with nothing but sinister machinations.

Aurora likes to think of herself as a protector of the Commonwealth. Others may see her as a distant and aloof mercenary, but she doesn't mind it-no connections mean she can't get hurt. When a certain group of Gunners gives her trouble, she looks for help; she hears of MacCready-a gun-for-hire in Goodneighbor. She hires the former Gunner and soon sees that he is true to his word as a sharpshooter, but she never expected the trouble in store for her, or that a connection would form between the two mercenaries. A nuclear apocalypse after a terrible war renders the earth barren and void of life. A lone remnant of that war, a bio-metric wolf with metal bones beneath living flesh and skin wanders aimlessly, unsure of purpose or direction. The robotic parts are the only thing keeping it alive for its hundred year lifespan. One day it encounters something strange, something different; a human boy. The boy is unafraid of the wolf and is, in fact, excited to see it. He is looking for animals who his mother told him were ancient guardians of his people and a sign of the one thing they had been waiting so long for; life. But the boy is unaware that this wolf was an animal-like weapon used to hunt down and destroy his people and not a "real" animal at all. Together the boy and the wolf will discover what being alive truly means, and how to navigate through a world reborn in radioactive peril.
