Thirteen-year-old Hanna gets back to London from a Christmas holiday in Japan to face the usual mob of bullies at school. Things seem to be getting worse and Hanna is growing a bit desperate. She misses her old school and her old friends from Winchester. And at home, the tension between her parents isn’t getting better, either. 

Then one day, early in the new term, her old friend Lilli pops up at her school. She can hardly believe her ears and eyes. Lilli has moved to London! With her old friend by her side, Hanna starts find ways of coping with home and school problems. But Lilli is different somehow, cheekier, more daring and will stop at nothing to help Hanna with her problems. 

Getting to know Lilli better, Hanna discovers Lilli has a ‘wound’ that needs healing and sets out to help reunite Lilli’s estranged parents.  As domestic and home life lurch toward ever greater crises, Hanna makes a shocking discovery about Lilli and herself that offers them both the chance of a new and hopeful beginning.

But one night something happens which finally pushes him over the edge, and as a result, he leaves his house the next morning with two things: his mother's gun and a plan. He and Mikayla are fighting habitually, his home life is still unbearable, and his time at school is hardly any better, made worse by a bully named Calvin. Their mutual dislike of one another leads to a lot of hostility, routinely leading to Jay being sent to his school's principal. One confrontation in particular goes much too far, resulting in Jay's expulsion from school. With everything seemingly piling up, Jay is very close to his breaking point, and late one night he is blindsided by the unthinkable, pushing him much too far and effectively planting in his mind a cruel and horrific plan for revenge.
