Becoming a teenager is harder than most expect it to be. Your hormones are raging and your body is changing. The innocents you once had as a child starts to slowly fade as you're introduced to new things. This is the age for rebellious behavior and reckless choices. Then comes high school, 4 years of challenging decisions that determine the rest of your life, some prepare for it while others don't even think about it. You enter a whole new world filled with judgment, peer pressure, low self-esteem and drama. Your circle of friends gets smaller and your personality starts to form. So much can happen from the 9th grade on up especially if you're an outsider looking in.
16 year old Kaliyah has been home schooled from kindergarten to 10th grade. She finally gets to go to public school after her mother loses custody of her to her father. This is a big deal for Kaliyah, she's been sheltered her whole life and doesn't really know how to interact with kids her age. Kaliyah is a shy person but she's dreamed for this day to come. Best friends, boys, lunch at the lunch table, crushes, gossip, and much more is what Kaliyah thinks high school is all about. Her mind might have played a trick or two on her cause what she thought was completely wrong.
Being raised in the upscale suburban area of California doesn't really help her situation either. Her father is rather wealthy for the most part, owning a business that's taking the city by storm. He refused to leave the place that got him to where he is now, so he resides in his hometown of Ensley which is in Birmingham, Alabama. It's a place most avoid because of the violence within the area, the drugs, and hood rats. If Kaliyah only knew what she was getting herself into, graduating should be the least of her worries.
