The God of Lost Connections

A story full of Japanese folklore, magical creatures, and a connection stronger that life itself:

Teff just graduated from college, and now she has no idea what to do with her life. She's spending her last summer of job-less freedom with her family, who lives on an American military base in northern Japan. She has no idea what to do with herself, her seemingly useless History degree, and these weird visions she keeps having, so she turns to the Shinto gods in the hopes that they will tell her what the hell she's supposed to do now.

Teruo is a young Japanese man grieving something he doesn't remember losing. He's searching for the girl he keeps seeing in his mind, because he knows that she's in grave danger.

These two strangers bump into each other at a neighborhood shrine, and, despite not speaking a single word of the other's language, are able to understand each other perfectly. Teruo believes that the kami of the shrine granted Teff the ability to speak Japanese because she's supposed to help him find the girl in his visions. Teff doesn't believe that Teruo can't actually speak the perfect English she hears from him, but there's just something about him that keeps her from walking away.
