Krystal Miles comes from a long line of engineers, her family being the ones responsible for extended space travel. Unfortunately, she decides to enlist as a medic instead of an engineer in the Intergalactic Marines. Hoping to make a name for herself as a medic and not an engineer, Krystal is selected as the head medic for the ESX Vesper, a military cargo craft. 

She meets Lieutenant Uepar, a genderless Saturnian and communications officer of the Vesper, and there is a certain attraction between the two. However, they know that there is something different about Krystal, and wonders why she's keeping her secret to herself.

While traveling through the Quadrant, the crew encounters a stranded Venusian, Klazid Ser, a victim of a space pirate attack. The Vesper crew decides to take him in, to take him to an outpost on their delivery path. He is immediately drawn to Krystal but he also feels that she's hiding something about herself. 

Will this supply trip through Quadrant Two be as easy as the crew expects? And what does Uepar know about Krystal?

After far too many post world war civil battles for Martian rights, Old Berling leads the U.F front with its ability for its citizens to coexist well with the mutants, the humans, and the Martians. However, bigotry is not easily solved. U.F soldiers Malakai, Hendrix, and Zed are tasked with learning more about the otherworldly Maxis Sovereign and in doing so is forced to co-exist in the alien colony. What will the men do when faced with their own personal battles of growing up in a bigoted society, but now have to handle learning about an entire new race of people that threaten the very peace the men are trying to make on earth. This membrane allows government to exploit them and reduce them to their work, treated as nothing more than a set of arms. Dax is in charge of the configuration of the topcortex. The army produces the implants which are its main source of income. Dax is very brave and selfless. She tries to reduce the award procedure to people to free them. If she succeeds, this can annihilate the army. Its chief Colonel Monarc needs to neutralize Dax. To reach his objective, Monarc destroys experimental results, aspirates thoughts of the ruling class with his topcortex, kills a famous astronaut and destroys his heart given to replace Telio's. Monarc wants to impose on Dax an artificial heart for Telio. By controlling the cardiac implant of Telio, Monarc will dominate Dax. Dax changes the rules of the game and will pay the ultimate sacrifice even if she unveils her secret.
