A side can switch either consciously by deciding to do things that would change them for the better or worse, or unconsciously. 

   When Thomas Sanders starts going through a difficult time Virgil realizes that the sides are unconsciously changing into darker versions of themselves. 

   If Virgil can't stop this Thomas will be unable to work without a proper sense of Morality, Creativity, and Logic.
