The Cycle begins at life and ends at death. What happens in between?

Bestowed with a mask that had taken shape of a crow's skull, Azrail wanders through the damp alleys of the lower cities. One fateful night, in the middle of collecting souls, he found himself enchanted by a bright pair of jeweled blue eyes. To his horror, the owner of the eyes that belongs to a child at the age of no more than two, is on his list of souls to collect. His body moved on its own and before the child met her destined demise, she was already in his arms.

With his life now endangered from saving the child's life, would he choose to take responsibility for the soul he had saved?
